Ten ways to ensure you’re eating “Just Right.”

We get it. Between your family, your work and there not seeming like there are enough hours in the day, eating healthy seems to be one more task that is too hard to add to your schedule. That’s why SHOP ‘n SAVE – with some help from eatright.org – is sharing these ten tips that make eating “Just Right” a little easier.

Breakfast. It really is the most important meal of the day.
A healthy breakfast packed with lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables really can get your day started properly. Want to add some sweetness, too? Make a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fresh fruit and whole grain cereal.

Hydrate!
If you’re an older adult or someone who is really active, you need to drink plenty of water. How much? According to webmd.com, experts say that you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. And avoid those sugary drinks while you’re at it!

Go half and half.
Sure, you could use measuring cups to see how close your portions are to the recommended serving size. Or follow this simple solution: divide your plate in half, with one side for fruits and veggies and the other for lean proteins and grains. To top it off, add one serving of fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt.

Switch out for seafood.
Fish and shellfish offer plenty of nutrients, including healthy omega-3 fats. Worried about high mercury levels? Fish like salmon, trout, oysters and sardines give you the omega-3s you need and less of the mercury you don’t.

Ask your doctor.
Need to eat better to lose weight? Looking to lower your risk level? How about managing your diet with a chronic disease? Before you make any drastic dietary change, ask your doctor. Or consult a nutritionist for some personalized advice.

The great snack change-up.
Sure – there’s nothing like a handful of potato chips! But when you’re watching your waistline, it’s time to find snacks that don’t pack on the pounds. We recommend raw veggies like carrots or celery with some low-fat cottage cheese!

Go exploring.
One of the hidden benefits of eating healthier is that you’ll discover some new foods you never knew you’d like. Be adventurous on your next trip to SHOP ‘n SAVE! Try a different apple variety. Discover the wonder of avocadoes. And while you’re at it, check out Wild Harvest – our brand of flavorful foods that are free from over 100 undesirable ingredients.

Cook it up!
Making your meals at home – instead of dining out – can be healthy, cost-effective and fun. Plus, because you’re preparing it, you’ll know exactly what ingredients are in each dish as well as proper portion sizes.

Add seasonings, not salt.
Herbs and spices can add plenty of flavor to your food without the added sodium from salt. And for an added taste treat, why not try some fresh herbs from SHOP ‘n SAVE’s produce department?

Go whole grain.
Try to make at least half of your grains whole. Go for 100% whole-grain breads, cereals, crackers, pasta and brown rice. You’ll find them throughout your local SHOP ‘n SAVE!
