SHOP 'N SAVE PRESENTS CHECK FOR $117,000 TO MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION
Retailer Celebrates Two Decades of Fundraising for the Cause
PITTSBURGH Sept. 5, 2018 SHOP 'n SAVE, the independently owned and operated grocery chain with more than 90 stores in Western Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia, is proud to announce it has raised $117,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) through its annual community-fueled fundraising efforts.
SHOP 'n SAVE's independently owned and operated stores kicked off this year's fundraising push with its annual Shamrock sales, where shoppers purchased paper shamrock cut-outs at checkout in support of the cause. Retailers also raised funds for Aisles of Smiles, a program that gives SHOP 'n SAVE customers the opportunity to give back by purchasing participating products. All proceeds go directly to the MDA.
The group's collective efforts in support of MDA were commemorated during the 20th Annual Walter Knopp Golf Classic, hosted on July 16 at Edgewood Country Club. The annual golf outing honors the late Walter Knopp, a beloved member of the SHOP 'n SAVE family who owned three SHOP 'n SAVE locations before he died of ALS in 2004.
"It's truly a privilege to carry on this tradition year after year, led by our retailers' philanthropic spirit and commitment to the cause," said Don Fabian, SHOP 'n SAVE senior merchandiser. "We couldn't be more proud to join in the MDA's fight against neuromuscular disease."
After spending the day on the golf course on July 16, the teams gathered for an awards presentation to celebrate this year's fundraising efforts. Latrobe SHOP 'n SAVE storeowner Dan Altman was the recipient of the 2018 MDA Achievement Award, having sold the most shamrocks in-store to raise $4,018 for MDA.
Since beginning the fundraising initiative, SHOP 'n SAVE has raised more than $1.8 million for the MDA in Knopp's name. Every dollar goes toward MDA's mission to transform the lives of people affected by muscle debilitating diseases and to find a cure for muscular dystrophy.
