Retailers to Sell Shamrocks In-Store for 19th Year in Support of Research on Muscle Debilitating Diseases

Pittsburgh, Pa. – February 13, 2017 – SHOP ‘n SAVE, the independently owned and operated grocery chain with more than 100 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, New York, Virginia and West Virginia is kicking off its yearly fundraising initiative benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Participating SHOP ‘n SAVE locations will sell paper shamrock cut-outs in-store February 13 through March 18. The funds raised will be donated to the MDA for research to advance treatment and cures of muscle debilitating diseases. The funds will also provide access to MDA care centers across the country and help send children with Muscular Dystrophy to summer camp.

“We are proud to continue this important initiative with the MDA for the 19th year,” said Don Fabian, SHOP ‘n SAVE Senior Merchandiser. “The commitment our retailers show each year to support the fight against muscle debilitating diseases never ceases to amaze me. We are truly honored to be able to give back to the MDA.”

In 2016 alone, SHOP ‘n SAVE raised a total of $121,912 in support of the MDA through the shamrock cut-out sale and the grocer’s annual Walter Knopp Golf Classic. The New Castle SHOP ‘n SAVE led the shamrock sales effort with a total of $3,377. Storeowner, Dan Falcone, received the MDA Achievement Award.

The fundraising will culminate on July 17 with the Walter Knopp Golf Classic at Edgewood Country Club. The golf outing was named after Walter Knopp, a SHOP ‘n SAVE family member who suffered from ALS and passed in 2004. Knopp rose through the ranks at SHOP ‘n SAVE, starting as a stock boy and eventually becoming the owner of the Heidelberg, Century Square and South Fayette SHOP ‘n SAVE locations. Each year, he is honored through the golf outing.
